Nestling in the pretty village of Shamley Green at the edge of the Surrey Hills, is The Speckledy Hen, a new café/deli that has become quite a favourite of mine recently. Housed in the wonderfully rustic Old Forge, it prides itself on its locally sourced and lovingly homemade food, not to mention its warm welcome.

With exposed brick walls, painted tables and mismatched chairs, the café oozes country charm. Imagine wooden crates of pot plants and flowers outside, cutlery arranged in jam jars and food that is served on chunky hen-shaped boards and you’re there.

On offer are great teas and coffees, an irresistible array of cakes, and a range of delicious breakfast and lunch dishes. For me, the savoury filo tarts alone make a visit worthwhile; I’d eat one a day if I could.

The deli sells a small, but perfectly formed, selection of goodies; enough to tempt any food lover. Should homewares be more your thing then you’re in luck, as many of the vintage-style accessories that are on display throughout the café are also for sale.
